
Antonio Toscano
Antonio Toscano, M.D., born on 16 December 1956 in Messina, Italy, is Full Professor of Neurology at the University of Messina and Head of the Neurology and Neuromuscular Disorders Unit at AOU Policlinico “G. Martino”. He graduated in Medicine in 1981, specialized in Neurology in 1985, and completed post-doctoral training in London (1986–1987) at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and St. Bartholomew’s Medical College, focusing on mitochondrial disorders.
He was Associate Professor from 2000 to 2008 and has been Full Professor since 2009. Since 2018, he has served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and he is currently Director of the UOSD Stroke Unit (since 2022), Coordinator of the International Translation Medicine and Surgery PhD Programme (since 2023), and General Secretary of the European Academy of Neurology (since 2024). In 2026, he will be President of the ICNMD Congress in Florence.
Prof. Toscano has held leading roles in scientific societies, including President of the Italian Association of Myology (2009–2012), Chairman of the EAN Panel on Muscle Disorders (2016–2018), and Secretary of the Italian Society of Neurology (2021–2023). He is co-chairman of the Italian Neuromuscular Day and a member of the ERN-NMD Scientific Board. His research focuses on neurogenetic diseases, particularly neuromuscular, neurodegenerative, and cerebrovascular disorders, and he has authored more than 330 peer-reviewed publications.
